As Maine goes, so goes the nation?
A political adage in the 19th century pegged Maine as the bellwether state in presidential elections. We think that in the modern political era, Tennessee is a better bellwether.
Since Franklin Roosevelt formed his New Deal coalition in 1932, only in 1960 did the Volunteer State buck the national trend. Few other states have more consistently reflected the mood of the nation.
